Tank Battalions in the Battle of the Bulge

The Battle of the Bulge was a pivotal moment in World War II, and it was the 609th Tank Destroyer Battalion that played a significant role in this battle. The battalion was activated on December 15, 1941, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and went on to serve with distinction throughout the war.

In January 1945, the entire battalion fought to eliminate the Bulge, a large German salient that had been pushing into Allied lines. Additionally, a yearbook from 1942, provided courtesy of John Ahrenholz, includes photos and a short history of the unit personnel at that time.

The commanding officers of the 609th Tank Destroyer Battalion included Major Russell T. Ahrenholz, who served as Company Commander in the 609th. The battalion's tanks were used to devastating effect against the enemy, earning it the nickname 'The Tank Killers.'
